Theophrasta is the eponymous plant genus of the subfamily of Theophrastoideae in the family of the primrose family (Primulaceae). It was named by Carl von Linné after the Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus von Eresos .

description

The Theophrasta species are upright, unbranched bushes or small trees with prickly trunks. The large leaves are prickly-toothed or toothed on the edge.

The inflorescence above the foliage is an almost terminal cluster of many flowers . The flowers are five-fold and hermaphroditic. The crown is bell-shaped, its color is orange-brown to pale yellow-brown, with age it darkens to brownish black. The appendages of the crown protrude and are obliquely oblong, they start inside the tube. The stamens are united at the base and the anthers are narrowly elongated.

The berry is almost round, the pericarp is thin and wrinkled.

distribution

The genus Theophrasta is endemic to the island of Hispaniola, which belongs to the Greater Antilles .
