The Catholic Church of Saint-Edern in Lannédern , a parish in the Finistère department in the French region of Brittany , was started in the 16th century and largely built in the 17th century. The church is dedicated to the holy Edern , a Breton saint who, according to legend, died in the place named after him. In 1915, the church, which was part of an enclosed parish with a perimeter wall, an ossuary , now known as Chapelle Sainte-Anne (Anna Chapel), and a Calvaire belonged to and in which rich furnishings from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved is included in the list of architectural monuments ( Base Mérimée ) in France as Monument historique .

architecture

Exterior construction

The bell tower rises above the portal on the west facade and is crowned by a dome with a lantern . The west portal is embedded between massive buttresses and was built in 1606. The southern vestibule, in the niches of which no sculptures have been preserved, is dated by an inscription with the year 1662.

inner space

The interior consists of a three-aisled nave divided into four bays , a transept and a just closed choir . Wide arcades in the central nave , which rest on strong pillars without capitals , open to the two aisles. The entire interior is covered by a wooden barrel . The beams are decorated with reliefs and their ends are designed as the mouths of monsters. The oldest part of the church is the choir, which, like the tracery of the apse window, in which three fleur-de-lys can be seen, dates back to the 16th century.

Passion window
  • Passion window

The central choir window (window 0) is divided into four lancets and three levels. It was probably created in 1564. Originally, scenes of the Passion were depicted on the twelve panes , of which only the scenes of the entry into Jerusalem (bottom, right outside), the washing of the feet (center, second pane from left) and the Lord's Supper (center, third pane from left), the flagellation (below, second disk from left), the carrying of the cross (above, second disk from left), Jesus before Caiaphas (above, third disk from left), and fragments depicting the apostles (below, third disk from left), are preserved. The scenes were supplemented in the 1750s with fragments of other windows, such as the depiction of a Pietà, under which the year 1571 can be read. The panes depicting the Last Judgment and the holy Edern riding his stag also come from other windows and were probably added at that time. In the tracery on the outside left God the Father with the globe and on the right outside the handkerchief of Veronica are shown, above again the holy Edern riding his stag.

Grisaille window
  • Grisaille window

The three-lane grisaille window (window 6) was made around 1750 to 1752. The small hexagonal discs frame the Christ monogram and the Mary monogram . In the lower area, the apostle Peter is depicted in small oval medallions on the left , a Madonna and Child in the middle and Saint Barbara on the right . The medallion in the tracery contains a portrait of Yves Thomas, who was pastor of Lannédern in 1752.

The sculptures and shrines are colored and date from the 17th century.
