The Pointe de la Torche ( tip of the torch ) (often short La Torche - eponymous in French torche , "torch") is in danger of becoming an island due to sea erosion. It is located in the Cornouaille in the Finistère department in western Brittany in France , north of Penmarch , in the municipality of Plomeur between the headlands of Pointe du Raz and Pointe de Penmarc'h .

The place is of particular prehistory interest. The peninsula was around 5000 BC. Inhabited by Mesolithic fishermen and collectors. In the 1880s, French archaeologist Paul du Chatellier found the skeleton of a Mesolithic man in a kitchen garbage heap .

Dolmen Beg at Dorchenn

On the eponymous headland in the sea lies Beg an Dorchenn , a dolmen with side chambers explored in 1946 , which was probably lengthened by a passage in the late Neolithic.

During a rescue excavation, bones of at least 5 people were found in the north side chamber and in part of the passage. The C14 determination 5490 resulted in the age 4499-4090 BC with a probability of 95%. Chr.

Others

The place is popular among surfers because of its good wind and wave conditions, but also very dangerous because of its extremely strong undercurrent. The headland of La Torche divides the wide beach, which is suitable for sand yachts, into the northern Plage de Treguennec and the southern Plage de Pors Can , offers beautiful rock formations and is a popular photo opportunity because of the strong surf. In the landscape around La Torche you can still find the remains of partially blown up German bunkers from the Second World War.

Nearby

A little to the east, about five kilometers away, is Notre-Dame de Tronoën with the oldest Calvary in Brittany. Also noteworthy is the menhir of Kerscaven at the entrance to the village of Penmarc'h, whose erosion channels have been compared to folds of clothing .
