Rochechouart ( Occitan Rechoard ) is a French village with 3778 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
Rochechouart is the administrative seat of the Arrondissement Rochechouart and the Canton of Rochechouart . The name is pronounced " Roschuar ".
geography
Rochechouart is located in the area of the Rochechouart-Chassenon crater , a meteorite crater that, according to the latest findings of a German-French research team, is 200 million years old and was only identified as such in 1967. The city lies on the banks of the Graine , which receives its left tributary Veyres here . The Gorre River runs along the northern municipal boundary .
history
Name: Rochechouart is composed of Roca and Cavardus , the first part describes an easily defendable rock spur, the second part is the name of the knight who built a castle here around the year 1000.
The city was the seat of the Vice Counts of Rochechouart for 800 years . The coat of arms of the vice counts is now the coat of arms of the city.
