Saint-Junien is a small French town with 11,202 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the community of Vienne Glane and the canton of Saint-Junien , of which it is the capital.
geography
Saint-Junien is located in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Nature Park , 29 kilometers northwest of Limoges . The Vienne , Glane and Gorre rivers flow through the municipality.
history
Saint-Junien is named after a hermit who is said to have lived in a grotto there in the 6th century. An abbey was built on his grave in the 10th century. A city wall was built in the 11th century. From the 11th century, Saint-Junien was a stronghold of the glove makers , the white tanners and the felt manufacture . The bishop of Limoges was in the 13th century seigneur of the village and gave her in 1254, the city charter ( liberté communale ).
Town twinning
Saint-Junien has three twinning partnerships. Since 2001 there has been a partnership with the small Polish town of Żukowo , since 1970 a partnership with the Belgian town of Jumet, which is now part of Charleroi , and since 2000 with the small German town of Wendelstein .
Culture and sights
Saint-Junien is represented with three flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.
The collegiate church of St-Junien was built from the end of the 11th century to the 13th century.

Controlled designations of origin (AOC) for butter ( Beurre Charentes-Poitou, Beurre des Charentes and Beurre des deux Sevres ) and Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) for veal (Veau du Limousin) , lamb (Agneau du Limousin and Agneau du Poitou ) apply in the municipality -Charentes) , pork (Porc du Limousin) , ham (Jambon de Bayonne) and wine (Haute-Vienne blanc, rosé or rouge) .
