Joseph Jiel-Laval , actually Joseph Marie François Laval or Pierre-Joseph Laval , (born November 26, 1855 in Saint-Junien , † February 26, 1917 in Bordeaux ) was a French cyclist.

Life

Jiel Laval grew up in Angers . His first bike race he ran in 1876 on the unicycle for the Veloce Club d'Angers . The following year he settled in Bordeaux and opened a shop for bicycles, initially called Vélocipèdes Jiel-Laval , later Cycles Jiel-Laval . The nickname Jiel came from the initials of his name, Joseph Laval . In Bordeaux he founded the Veloce Club Bordelais and was one of the founders of the Ligue française d'éducation physique . In France he was one of the most prominent cyclists.

In May 1891 Laval finished fifth in the first Bordeaux – Paris event . On September 6th of the same year he started on a Clément bicycle in the first staging of the 1200 kilometer long Paris – Brest – Paris cycle race . At first he was leading by an hour ahead of Charles Terront , but could not hold onto it because he had to take a sleep break due to exhaustion. Terront's manager Herbert Duncan instructed his driver to drive around the hotel where Laval was sleeping so as not to be seen by Jiel-Laval's companions. When Laval woke up, he learned that Terront was now two hours ahead of him. The professional Terront won with 71 hours and 37 minutes, Laval as an amateur finished second behind him with 80 hours and four minutes.

Jiel-Laval was supervised by the physician and neuropsychiatrist Philippe Tissié , who made studies of his psyche and physique before, during and after these long races. This makes Jiel-Laval the first athlete to be the focus of a neuropsychological examination. The results have been published in several journals.

From 1899 to 1900 the company Jiel-Laval et Cie. the small car Mignonette-Luap .

Jiel-Laval died in 1917 at the age of 61. The eulogy at the funeral was given by the well-known journalist Maurice Martin . A year later, his widow gave the bike on which her husband had ridden Paris – Brest – Paris to the Musée des arts et métiers in Paris . Rue Jiel Laval is named after him in Bordeaux .
