The Gamma Island ( English gamma Iceland ) is a 1.6 km long island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies in the group of the Melchior Islands at their southwestern end.
The first rough mapping of the island was carried out by the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . The naming as Île Gouts after a captain of the French Navy did not prevail. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped them again in 1928 and named them after the Greek letter gamma in connection with the naming of the other islands in the group . The gamma island was measured as part of Argentine expeditions in 1942, 1943 and 1948. In Argentina it is known as Isla Observatorio (German " Sternwarten Insel" ) known.
