Monistrol-sur-Loire is a French municipality with 8718 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Haute-Loire in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the arrondissement of Yssingeaux and is the capital of the canton of Monistrol-sur-Loire . The inhabitants are called Monistrolia (nes) .
geography
The community is located in the Velay , a landscape in the French Massif Central . The Loire borders the municipality to the west, and its tributary Lignon du Velay on the southern municipal boundary . Monistrol-sur-Loire is surrounded by the neighboring communities La Chapelle-d'Aurec and Aurec-sur-Loire in the north, Firminy and La Séauve-sur-Semène in the northeast, Sainte-Sigolène in the east, Les Villettes in the southeast, Saint-Maurice -de-Lignon in the south, Beauzac in the south-west and Bas-en-Basset in the north-west.
The national route 88 runs through the municipality .
history
Monasteriolum appears as a place for the first time in the 9th century with the simultaneous appearance of the relics of St. Marcellin. The bishops of Puy had built a château here.
