resume

Kaminsky studied journalism and English at the University of Illinois and rhetoric at Northwestern University , where he received his doctorate in communications in 1972 . He became a professor and he taught there from 1973 to 1989 filmmaking and film history, before moving to Sarasota at the Florida State University changed and the line took the conservatory for film and television production to the 1994th

He started writing detective novels in the 1970s , and his first protagonist was the detective Toby Peters. He got his fictional commissions from existing celebrities, most of whom came from the film business, such as Errol Flynn , Gary Cooper or Charlie Chaplin , but also others such as Albert Einstein or Salvador Dalí .

In the early 80s, Kaminsky began to be interested in his Eastern European roots. This was the inspiration for the series about the Russian inspector Porifirij Petrovich Rostnikov, which is set in Moscow. Considerable research work was necessary for the first novels of the Rostnikov series, as Kaminsky did not visit Moscow for the first time until the late 1980s. The fourth Rostnikov novel A Cold Red Sunrise (dt. Cold Sun ), which appeared in 1987, Kaminsky was successful book. A third recurring figure with autobiographical features is Abe Liebermann, a Jewish policeman from Chicago, where Kaminsky had lived for a long time.

At the age of sixty, Stuart Kaminsky stopped teaching and has since intensified his writing activities. He published over 60 crime novels and 35 short stories from 1977 until his death. There are also several biographies from the film world ( Gary Cooper , Clint Eastwood , John Huston and Don Siegel ) and non-fiction books, also on the subject of film. He also wrote film and television scripts , he was the dialogue writer of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) and wrote an episode of a Nero Wolfe series (2002), one of his favorite detectives. He contributed two novels to the literary offshoot of the crime series Detective Rockford - a call is enough , and from 2005 he wrote three further books for CSI: New York .

In 2006 Kaminsky became chairman of the US crime writers' association Mystery Writers of America (MWA), which nominated him six times for the Edgar Award (for three novels, two short stories and a non-fiction book). A good half of Stuart Kaminsky’s crime novels have been translated into German. From 1984 to 1999 in particular his series about Toby Peters and Inspector Rostnikov were published almost entirely in Germany.
