Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (born November 4, 1933 in Zungeru , Northern Nigeria, † November 26, 2011 in London ) was a Nigerian officer and politician .

Life

Ojukwu came from a wealthy Igbo family . In 1957 he joined the army . After studying history at Oxford and attending an English military academy , he became military governor of the eastern region of Nigeria in 1966 . After the pogroms against the Igbo in the northern region, he declared the eastern region to be independent as the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967 . From 1967 to 1970 he was head of state of Biafra. After the military defeat in the Biafra War , he went into exile in the Republic of Ivory Coast after the surrender on January 15, 1970 and was given an amnesty in 1982. He then returned to politics in Nigeria, where he lived in the state of Anambra . Until the end he was considered a proponent of extensive autonomy or independence of the Igbo region (city triangle Enugu - Onitsha - Umuahia ). In 2003 he was a presidential candidate. Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised him for his constructive role after the war.
