Léon César Autonne (born July 28, 1859 in Odessa ; † January 12, 1916 ) was a French engineer and mathematician who dealt with algebraic geometry, differential equations and algebra (matrices, etc.).

Life

Autonne studied from 1878 to 1880 at the École Polytechnique and then at the École des ponts et chaussées , where he became chief engineer. He received his doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1882 (Recherches sur les intégrales algébriques des équations differentielles à coefficients rationnels), with Charles Hermite as chairman of the examination board. In his dissertation, he built on the work of Camille Jordan .

An essay by him in the Comptes Rendus Acad. Sci. Paris from 1891 is one of the earliest mentions of the term Lie groups (as Mr. Lie's groups).

He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians of 1897, 1900, 1904 and 1908.

The Autonne-Takagi factorization of a complex symmetric matrix is named after him (see Symmetric Matrix ).
