Adopted by a family of officers in Berlin, he grew up there with his two siblings Albrecht and Charlotte. Albrecht sees Hans as the ideal husband for his sister Charlotte. But Hans doesn't really feel at home in Germany, because he always has to think of South Africa, his real home. When he took up the profession of geologist, Hans returned to South Africa, despite the disappointment of his family in Berlin.
Once there, Hans goes in search of mineral resources and gets into a rivalry with his former friend and stepbrother Albrecht, who, like Hans, takes the route to South Africa.
