Jean Thérèse Louis de Beaumont, marquis d'Autichamp (* 1738 in Angers , † January 12, 1831 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye ) was a French maréchal de camp and held the position of lieutenant-général .

Life

Autichamp, brother of Antoine-Joseph-Eulalie de Beaumont d'Autichamp , became a soldier at the age of eleven, took part in the campaigns of the Seven Years' War from 1757 to 1762, first as a wing adjutant to Marshal Broglie , then as colonel of a dragoon regiment , and in 1770 became brigadier of the armes du roi and commander of the gendarmerie of Luneville , 1780 Maréchal de camp and 1789 Quartermaster General in which contracted under the walls of Paris army.

His energetic plans frustrated the indecision of the mob. Autichamps followed the Prince of Condé , whose stable master he was, to Turin. In the campaign in Champagne (1792) he led a French cavalry corps he had set up and then, in defending Maastricht , did great damage to the army of the republic through bold attacks.

When the Austrians had horrified the city in 1793, Autichamps went to Switzerland and from there to England. The intended landing in the Vendée gave up Autichamps after the Quiberon disaster and entered Russian services in 1797 , where he became commander of the mounted guards, then cavalry inspector of the Ukraine, Crimea and the Dniester. In 1799 he commanded a corps of 30,000 men that Suvorov was to support in Switzerland; but Masséna prevented unification, and Autichamp returned to Russia.

Louis XVIII appointed him lieutenant-général and governor of the Louvre in 1815, whom he defended at the age of 92 during the July days of 1830 with a tenacity that even made the enemy respectful. Only reluctantly did he submit to the order on the night of the 28th to the 29th to relinquish command to someone else. Autichamp died on January 12, 1831 in St. Germain.
