Christian Pløyen: On the Faroe Islands called helst fólkakærasti amtmaður Føroya - beliebtester the people bailiff of the Faroe Islands

Christian Pløyen (born January 12, 1803 in Copenhagen , † June 9, 1867 in Holbæk , Denmark ) was a Danish lawyer and high government official.

He was Landvoigt from 1830 and bailiff of the Faroe Islands from 1837 to 1847 and is considered the most important and popular amtmaður in the history of the country . With the Grindevisen (Faroese Grindavísan - " pilot whale") he also wrote a song based on the Faroese ballads . It is one of the most famous Faroese ballads - but with Danish lyrics.

Life

Christian Pløyen was the son of Frederik Adeler Pløyen. After graduating from high school in 1821, he studied law and graduated in 1826 as cand. Jur. from. This was followed by a legal career in the Danish Chamber of Pensions until he was appointed to the Faroe Islands as fúti (Landvoigt) in 1830 .

In 1837 he replaced Fritz Tillisch in the office of governor of the North Atlantic archipelago. His 1839 trip to the Shetland Islands with three Faroese was deliberately designed as an initiative to deepen the neighborly relations between the two archipelagos. Mutual innovations in agriculture and fishing were the result. His travelogue was also to contribute significantly to the Faroese debate on the abolition of the monopoly trade (1856). In 1840 Pløyen was a member of the Danish government commission, which dealt with the lifting of the Danish trade monopoly over the Faroe Islands . Even today, he is revered in the Faroe Islands as a democrat, who is said to have been legitimized locally - all of this far beyond his official duties at that time.

In 1848 Frederik VII appointed him deputy of the Faroe Islands for the constituent assembly that was supposed to formulate the Danish Basic Law . However, he failed when trying to represent the Faroese positions there. On January 1, 1849, he was scheduled to take office as bailiff of Vejle , which he swapped in favor of another interested party and thus became bailiff of Holbæk - until his death. In 1850 he received the title of Chamberlain and in 1867 the distinction of Commander of the Order of Dannebrog .

A contemporary biographer in Denmark described him as an extraordinarily capable, industrious and righteous man who enjoyed the utmost respect among both the Faroese and the people of Amt Holbæk for his interest in their concerns. When comparing the Faroese, Danish and also international sources about his person, there are consistent opinions.
