Tanja is a Russian pet form of Tatjana . Tanjusch (k) a or Tanjetschka are also used as belittling in Russian-speaking countries .

In the German-speaking world, Tanja is a given name that was mainly given in the 1970s; it was one of the ten most popular first names in West Germany from 1969 to 1977. In 1960 this first name was almost unknown in Germany, but since the mid-1980s its popularity has fallen sharply. In the GDR the first name Tanja was given very rarely.
