Józef Andrzej Załuski (born August 12, 1702 near Warsaw ; † January 7, 1774 ) was a noble Polish Catholic bishop , author , politician and book collector .

Career

After attending secondary schools and universities in Poland-Lithuania (Warsaw, Cracow), Danzig and studying at the Sorbonne , he received the sacrament of ordination in 1727 .

He followed Stanislaus I. Leszczyński to Lorraine. He was later the abbot of Wąchock in the Holy Cross Voivodeship (1759–1762).

Together with his brother Andrzej Stanisław, he founded the Załuski Library (also: Biblioteka Załuskich , Zalusciana ) in Warsaw in 1747 , which in the 18th century was one of the largest of its kind in the world. It mainly contained scientific works and existed for 50 years until it was disbanded by Russian troops. In 1748 he was accepted as an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg . In 1751 he became a member of the Accademia della Crusca in Florence .

Załuski wrote works on theology, history and library studies ( Bibliotheca poetarum Polonorum 1752 and 1754 and Bibliotheca Polona magnauniversalis ). He also translated plays from French.

Politically he opposed Stanisław August Poniatowski and was committed to the politics of the Russian Empire. He was therefore a political prisoner in Kaluga near Moscow from 1767 to 1773 .
