In 1778 the Diocese of Kiev was dissolved under Russian pressure. In 1798 it was united with the Diocese of Lutsk to form the Diocese of Lutsk-Zhytomyr.

In 1925 the diocese was rebuilt as the Diocese of Zhytomyr and renamed the Diocese of Kiev-Zhytomyr in 1998
