Roman Catholic bishops have been appointed to Kiev since 1321 after the area became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, these did not officiate, but mostly lived in Poland with this title.

In 1778 the Diocese of Kiev was dissolved under Russian pressure. In 1798 it was united with the Diocese of Lutsk to form the Diocese of Lutsk-Zhytomyr.
