Petro Herkulan Maltschuk OFMConv ( Ukrainian Петро Геркуліан Мальчук ; born July 7, 1965 in Slobozia-Raşcov , Moldovan SSR , Soviet Union ; † May 27, 2016 in Hrodna , Belarus ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Kiev .

Life

After school and military service, Petro Herkulan Maltschuk studied philosophy and theology at the Theological Seminary in Riga , Latvia . On January 3, 1989, he joined the religious order of the Franciscan Minorites . Maltschuk was ordained a priest on June 7, 1992 by Jan Olszański MIC , Bishop of Kamyanets-Podilskyi . From 1992 to 1998 he completed a theological doctorate at the Pontifical Antonianum , the Franciscan religious college in Rome . In 1998/99 he was pastor in Polonne in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast in western Ukraine. He was custodian of the Friars Minor in Ukraine (1999-2004) and Provincial of the Order of St. Michael the Archangel in Ukraine (2004-2007) as well as their spiritual (2007-2008). Maltschuk spoke Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Italian, German and Latvian.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on March 29, 2008 titular bishop of Media and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Odessa-Simferopol . He was ordained bishop by Marian Cardinal Jaworski , Archbishop of Lemberg , on May 3rd, 2008 in the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumption in Odessa ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič , Apostolic Nuncio in Ukraine, and Bronisław Bernacki , Bishop of Odessa-Simferopol .

On June 15, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. with the personal title of Archbishop ( ad personam ) to Bishop of the Diocese of Kiev-Zhytomyr . The inauguration in the Alexander Church was the first since 1680 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev itself; Maltschuk was also the first bishop of the diocese to hold the title of archbishop.

Maltschuk died at night on May 27, 2016 Belarusian Hrodna ( Grodno a) heart attack .
