The Alexander Church ( Ukrainian Це́рква свято́го Олекса́ндра / Zerkwa swjatoho Olexandra ; Latin Ecclesia Catholica St. Alexandri ) is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .

location

The Church of the Kiev-Zhytomyr Diocese is located on Kostolna Street ( вулиця Костьольна ) 17 in Shevchenko Raion between the Ukrainian House on European Square and St. Michael's Monastery in central Kiev.

history

The Alexander Church was built in honor of Tsar Alexander I and his victory over Napoleon Bonaparte . The foundation stone was laid and the church was consecrated in August 1817. Due to lack of money and the difficult building site, the construction of the church, which cost more than 200,000 rubles, lasted until 1842. The church was closed in 1937 and used between 1952 and 1990 as a planetarium and history library, for which the altars were removed. In 1990 it was returned to the Roman Catholic community, then restored until 1994, re-inaugurated on October 7, 1995 and visited by Pope John Paul II on June 25, 2001 .
