Andrzej Stanisław Załuski

Andrzej Stanisław Załuski (born December 2, 1695 in Jedlińsk , † December 16, 1758 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop , nobleman and bibliophile from Poland-Lithuania .

Life

Załuski studied in Gdansk and Rome. His ecclesiastical career began as an abbot . On October 22, 1723 he was appointed bishop of Plock . The episcopal ordination donated him on February 13, 1724 Felicjan Szaniawski , the bishop of Cracow ; Co- consecrators were Jan Feliks Szaniawski , auxiliary bishop in Kulm , and Franciszek Józef Kraszkowski , auxiliary bishop in Gniezno . On November 19, 1736 he was appointed Bishop of Lutsk and on March 8, 1739, Bishop of Kulm . This order was confirmed by Pope Clement XII. on July 20, 1739. On January 5, 1740 it was installed in the cathedral of Culmsee in his diocese. On March 12, 1746 he became Bishop of Krakow and on May 2, 1746 the solemn installation took place in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow. Załuski was one of the supporters of the Jesuits in Poland-Lithuania.

As a member of the Szlachta , he was appointed Grand Chancellor of the Polish Crown in 1735, which he held until 1746. As a politician, he was committed to reforming the increasingly inadequate Polish-Lithuanian state system in the 18th century.

Together with his brother Józef Andrzej Załuski (Bishop of Kiev), he is one of the founders of the Załuski Library in Warsaw, one of the world's largest libraries of the 18th century.
