Mojo Mendiola
Mojo Mendiola , also Mojo Trebron and Norbert Mendiola , (born January 12, 1954 in Kempen ; † October 20, 2017 ) was a German author, music journalist, Afro-Americanist, photographer and painter.
Life
Mendiola grew up in Düsseldorf and studied German and English-American studies there. Artistically, he began as a singer / songwriter for folk and blues in the 1970s and spent a lot of time in Amsterdam and London. In 1981 he went to New York City, where he was one of the winners of the "New York Songwriters in Concert" competition in Gerde's Folk City , along with Suzanne Vega . Under the guidance of LeRoi Jones / Amiri Baraka, he deepened his studies in Afro-American literature and history.
He retired from the stage in 1983. After he settled in Hamburg, he published as an author and concert photographer in various music magazines and newspapers, among others. a. in BM - Black Music & Jazz Review (London), Stereo (then Munich, now Euskirchen), Blues Forum (Berlin, closed in May 1987) and published the intercultural music website global-mojo.com. The Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago has included him in their Directory Of Scholars . He wrote the children's book “Palle Puzzlebüx and the Children of the Open City” and the satirical volume “Helmut Lichtergang explains Germany” . After 1999 he was mainly active as a visual artist.
In 2007 he moved to Krefeld. In 2008 he wrote the book “50 Years of Jazzkeller Krefeld ” together with Günter Holthoff . He was regularly featured in the daily newspaper Rheinische Post with articles in cultural journalism. From 2009 he presented his digital paintings and mixed media objects in public exhibitions in Krefeld, Kempen, Moers, Düsseldorf, Detroit and New York.
He died on October 20, 2017 at the age of 63.
