history

prehistory

A jazz bar was founded on Marktstrasse as early as 1956 . It was called High Society and was organized as a club. But in 1957 the “original cellar” closed again.

The beginnings

The present Krefeld Jazzkeller was built on April 10th 1958 by the student Hans-Josef (Jupp) Dillmann in the cellar of the house Lohstr. Founded in 92. This cellar was also called High Society. Students made up the majority of the members. The basement was very simply furnished, the walls were covered with colorful, abstract pictures. Events, often revival and jazz sessions, took place on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

1970-2006

The 1970s saw an unsteady time for the cellar. After the carnival in 1970 there was a fire in the basement. But operations could quickly be resumed. From 1972 the cellar fell into crisis. On November 13, 1975 the Jazzkeller was sold. After a renovation, the jazz cellar was reopened. Despite everything, things went downhill. The musical level sank, at times there were no more events at all.

Jazzkeller GmbH was founded on November 1st, 1976 and took over the cellar. The cellar was now operated collectively with other guests. The number of guests increased again and so did the musical level. But the inadequate structural conditions (acoustics, ventilation, visibility) of the jazz cellar became more and more of a problem. It was decided to radically rebuild the jazz cellar. In July 1978 it closed its doors for this purpose.

The Jazzkeller continued to be successful in the following years. Musicians such as Chris Hinze , Jasper van't Hof , Philip Catherine , Uwe Kropinski and Errol Dixon played in the basement. The Krefeld Jazz Club also organizes many concerts in the jazz cellar. Since 1997 there have been monthly session concerts under the name JazzAttack : Organized by Axel Fischbacher and Stefan Rademacher , musicians from the German jazz scene and often international guests perform.

2006

At the beginning of August 2006, the operator of the Jazzkeller had to file for bankruptcy due to excessive indebtedness . The continued existence of the Jazzkeller could be secured. After renovation work (new escape route, sanitary facilities) it resumed operations in September 2006.
