Gaetano Donato Giuseppe Domenico Latilla (also: Sig. Atilla, born January 12, 1711 in Bari ; † January 15, 1788 in Naples ) was an Italian composer of the Neapolitan School , who was very successful with his opera compositions.

Live and act

Gaetano Latilla received his first music lessons as a choirboy under Kapellmeister Nicola Calatrava at the Basilica di San Nicola in Bari. From the age of 15 he was trained at the Conservatorio S. Maria di Loreto in Naples, where Ignazio Prota (1690–1744), Francesco Feo and Domenico Gizzi (1684–1756) were among his teachers. In spring 1732 he made his debut with his comic opera Li Marite a forza at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in Naples. He then had success with his opera series in many cities in Italy . From 1738 to 1741 he was Vice Kapellmeister at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome . In the foreword in the libretto of his opera Siroe (1740) he is referred to as virtuoso del Duca di York . For health reasons he gave up this post and returned to Naples for about 10 years, where he is said to have been helpful in the training of his nephew Niccolò Piccini .

From December 1753 to March 1766, Latilla was maestro di coro at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice . From 1762 he also worked as Vice Kapellmeister at the side of Baldassare Galuppi at St. Mark's Basilica .

Charles Burney , who met Latilla in Venice in 1770, wrote ... I met Sgr. Atilla, a famous local composer with whom I had a long talk about the purpose of my trip. I found in him an intelligent, sociable man of about sixty years of age, who had read and thought much about the music of the old as well as of the modern, in the latter of which he had not taken an insignificant part for many years. I admired his honesty when he advised me to go to the Incurabili and listen to music from the girls which, he said, I would like very much. There are pupils of Signor Galuppi, who at that Conservatorio di Maestro Capella is ... .

In 1766 Latilla gave up all official offices in Venice and finally returned to Naples in 1774.

Latilla wrote numerous operas that premiered in Naples, Rome and Venice. He also composed numerous sacred works, mainly for use at the Ospedale della Pietà , as well as some instrumental works, including 6 string quartets (1770) and several symphonies.
