Jaakko Hintikka
Jaakko Hintikka (born January 12, 1929 in Vantaa , † August 12, 2015 in Porvoo ) was a Finnish philosopher . He was considered an expert in various areas of mathematical logic and game theory and the philosophy of mathematics , epistemology and philosophy of science , metaphysics , as well as various other philosophical specialties and historical problem contexts, including theories of Aristotle , René Descartes and Ludwig Wittgenstein .
Life
Hintikka received his doctorate in 1953 under Georg Henrik von Wright . From 1956 to 1959 he was a Junior Fellow at Harvard and after stays in Helsinki, Florida and Stanford, he was Professor of Philosophy at Boston University from 1990 onwards .
His area of interest was broad and ranged from early work on distributive normal forms to model theory , a possible world semantics, deontic logic and intensive, analytically trained occupation with various topics of theoretical philosophy, including modality, time and scientific methodology . With his book Knowledge and Belief from 1962 he developed one of the first formal languages in epistemic logic. His concern was to define the logical backgrounds of statements of knowledge and belief more precisely. Hintikka also developed what is known as interrogative logic .

hintikka , n. A measure of belief, the smallest logically discernible difference between beliefs. "He argued with me all night, but did not alter my beliefs one hintikka."
Dennett is referring to Hintikka's fundamental book Knowledge and Belief .
