Carl Friedrich Gethmann (philosopher)

Carl Friedrich Gethmann (born January 22, 1944 in Landsberg an der Warthe , today Gorzów Wielkopolski, Poland) is a German philosopher . Gethmann taught at the University of Duisburg-Essen . His focus is on philosophy of language , theory of reasoning , logic , phenomenology and applied philosophy (medical ethics, environmental ethics, technology assessment). Since March 2013, Gethmann has been a professor in the research group “Shaping the future humanely” at the University of Siegen . He has also been a member of the German Ethics Council since 2013 .

Life

After studying philosophy at the Universities of Bonn , Innsbruck and Bochum , he obtained his licentiate at the University of Innsbruck in 1967 . In 1971 he was at the Ruhr University Bochum with the dissertation Understanding and Interpretation. Research on the method problem in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger is doing his doctorate. In 1978 he completed his habilitation at the University of Konstanz with a thesis on protology. Investigations into the formal pragmatics of justification discourses . In 1979 he became a scientific adviser and professor (H3) at the University of Essen (transferred to a C3 professorship in 1980 ). In 1991 he was appointed to a C4 professorship at the University of Essen .

He received further appointments to chairs (each C4) at the universities of Stuttgart (in connection with a seat on the board of the Academy for Technology Assessment Baden-Württemberg, 1990), Oldenburg (1991), Konstanz (1993) and Bonn (1995), which he however refused.

From 1996 to 2012 Gethmann was also director of the European Academy for Research into the Consequences of Scientific and Technical Developments in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler gGmbH . He has been a member of the Academia Europaea (London) since 1991, a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences since 1998 and a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in Halle (Saale) since 2002 . From 2006 to 2008 Gethmann was President of the German Society for Philosophy . From September 15th to 19th, 2008, he carried out the Philosophy Congress Lifeworld and Science in Essen; The central themes of the 350 colloquium and section lectures were dealing with nature, technology , work and medical ethics. From 2007 to 2015 he was also a member of the University Council of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . Since 2008 he has also been a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering - acatech . In May 2016, Gethmann was appointed to the Ethics Council of the Max Planck Society .
