Christian Thiel

Christian Thiel (born June 12, 1937 in Neusalz / Oder) is a German philosopher and scientific theorist and a prominent representative of methodical constructivism .

Life

Thiel studied from 1956 mathematics , philosophy , psychology and sociology at the University in Erlangen and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1965 he did his doctorate with Rudolf Zocher in Erlangen on the meaning and meaning in the logic of Gottlob Freges . In 1966/67 he spent an academic year at the University of Texas in Austin as a postdoctoral fellow and then as an assistant professor. Finally, he completed his habilitation in 1970 under Paul Lorenzen with his work Basic Crisis and Basic Controversy on the foundations of mathematics and social science.

After being represented in Konstanz and Kiel, he was given the newly created chair for philosophy and philosophy of science at RWTH Aachen University in 1972 . In 1982 he was appointed to succeed Lorenzen at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and also in 1982 to the executive board of the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Theory of Science and the History of Science (IIWW) founded by Lorenzen .

Christian Thiel has been a member of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences , based in Brussels , since 1993 and of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina since 2000 . In 2005 Thiel retired and was appointed Vice President of the Brussels Académie.

Thiel has worked on topics from the modern history of science, in particular the logic of the 19th and 20th centuries and the work of Gottlob Frege . He is currently involved with Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert , Volker Peckhaus and Jürgen Mittelstraß in the publication of the works of the mathematics historian and phenomenologist Oskar Becker (1889–1964).
