Peter Janich (born January 4, 1942 in Munich ; † September 4, 2016 in Rauschenberg ) was a German philosopher and co-founder of methodical culturalism .

Life

Peter Janich studied physics , philosophy and psychology at the Universities of Erlangen and Hamburg. He received his PhD in philosophy in 1969 and was a visiting professor at the University of Texas at Austin in 1969/70 . From 1971 to 1973 he was Scientific Councilor and from 1973 to 1980 professor for the philosophy of science of the exact sciences at the University of Konstanz . From 1980 until his retirement in 2007 he held the chair for systematic philosophy with a focus on theoretical philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 2005 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . Since January 2016 Janich was Dr. phil. honorary at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Peter Janich was married to Annemarie Janich until his death. Nina Janich is his daughter (in addition to another daughter and a son).

Work areas

Janich was a co-founder and representative of the methodical culturalism as a continuation of the methodical constructivism of the Erlanger school ( Erlanger constructivism ). In this context, he and Paul Lorenzen and Rüdiger Inhetveen made fundamental contributions to protophysics , especially the protophysics of the time.

Janich taught a pragmatic and operationalist philosophy of science in Marburg , which dealt particularly with the fundamentals of natural sciences : mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry and psychology. Janich's students (and some of his assistants) were: Armin Grunwald , Mathias Gutmann , Gerd Hanekamp , Dirk Hartmann , Rainer Lange , Nikolaos Psarros , Wolfgang Schonefeld, Holm Tetens , Michael Weingarten , Walther Zitterbarth.

According to Janich, science arises from the stylization of life practices. The judging authority lies in the success of the action, ie in its success, its intended and actually achieved or occurred consequences.

Further areas of work: action theory , philosophy of language , epistemology , truth theory , philosophy of technology , history of science .
