Christoph Rüchardt

Christoph Johannes Rüchardt (born August 10, 1929 in Munich ; † February 22, 2018 ) was a German chemist and university professor .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Munich, Rüchardt studied chemistry at the University of Munich and at the University of Georgia in Athens . Then he was back in Munich, where he graduated in 1955. In 1956 he did his doctorate with Rolf Huisgen and then spent a year as a postdoc at Harvard University in Cambridge with Paul D. Bartlett and then for nine months at the California Institute of Technology , Pasadena, with John D. Roberts .

In 1963 he completed his habilitation in Munich. In 1968 he was offered a professorship at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and in 1972 as the successor to Arthur Lüttringhaus at the University of Freiburg , where he held a chair in organic chemistry until his retirement in 1996.

From 1987 to 1991 Rüchardt was Rector of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . He has been a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 1982, a member of the Leopoldina since 1991 and a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1999 .

Rüchardt's main areas of research were organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, free radical chemistry, reactive intermediates, and stereochemistry.
