Arthur Lüttringhaus

Arthur Lüttringhaus (born July 6, 1906 in Mülheim am Rhein , † May 27, 1992 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German chemist and university professor.

Life

Lüttringhaus came from a Cologne factory owner family. An uncle on his father's side, Arthur Lüttringhaus senior, was a chemist at BASF . From 1924 to 1927 he studied chemistry at the University of Munich and in 1927 moved to Adolf Windaus in Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1930 . It was there that he succeeded in crystallizing vitamin D 1 and vitamin D 2 for the first time . From 1931 to 1936 he conducted research under Karl Ziegler in Heidelberg. There he completed his habilitation in 1937 on topics in stereochemistry . His university career began in Berlin in 1938 as a private lecturer. In 1941 he became an adjunct professor at the University of Greifswald , in 1947 a full professor at the University of Halle and in 1951 a full professor of organic chemistry in Freiburg . There he was the successor to Hermann Staudinger . In 1972 he retired. Lüttringhaus was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin, the German Academy of Natural Scientists ( Leopoldina ) in Halle and a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Main research areas

Lüttringhaus mainly dealt with the fields of organic chemistry , stereochemistry and organometallic chemistry . In 1938 he found the Lüttringhaus rearrangement (diaryl ether in o -arylphenols), worked on sulfur compounds (in particular the structure elucidation of the trithiones as thioozonides), discovered a new type of asymmetric compounds ( atropisomerism ), synthesized phenol from chlorobenzene , while investigating ansa compounds the cholinesterase reactivator obidoxime chloride (toxogonin). In 1931 he succeeded in crystallizing vitamin for the first time (a previously common name for the mixture of ergocalciferol and lumisterol ).

In 1964, together with Gottfried Schill (his former doctoral student), he succeeded in the first targeted synthesis of catenanes .

He was co-editor of Scientia Chimica and the journal Chemical Reports .
