Hermann Anton Joseph Franz Xaver Tappeiner , from 1899 Tappeiner Edler von Tappein (born November 18, 1847 in Merano , † January 12, 1927 in Munich ) was an Austrian physician and pharmacologist .

Life

Hermann Tappeiner was the son of the doctor, botanist and anthropologist Franz Tappeiner (1816–1902).

He studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck . In 1868 he became active in the Corps Athesia. As an inactive , he moved to the Georg August University of Göttingen , the University of Leipzig , the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . In Leipzig he worked at the Physiological Institute of Carl Ludwig and in 1872 was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . In 1877 he completed his habilitation in physiology at the University of Munich with Carl von Voit . From 1879 to 1887 he taught as a professor of physiology and dietetics at the Royal Central Thierarzneischule in Munich . In 1887 he moved to the newly created chair for pharmacology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Munich. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1893 he was a full professor for pharmacology and head of the Institute for Experimental Pharmacology at Nussbaumstrasse 28 . On April 22nd, 1893, he gave his opening speech on the development and tasks of pharmacology . In 1923 he was at the age of 72 years emeritus .

In his research work he dealt with the resorption and the role of intestinal bacteria , with the effect of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa as an enveloping agent, with the toxicity of fluorosodium through feeding experiments with dogs and with the sensitization of individual cells and entire organisms to visible rays through photodynamic radiation substances ( photodynamic therapy ).

Hermann von Tappeiner was married to Elisabeth Charlotte Laura Anna Ziemssen (1861–1959) since 1882. He died at the age of 79 and was buried in the forest cemetery (Munich) .
