André Kaminski (born May 19, 1923 as Andrzei Henrik Kaminski in Geneva , † January 12, 1991 in Zurich ) was a Swiss writer of Polish origin.

Life

André Kaminski was the son of a Jewish psychiatrist from Poland. He grew up in Zurich and studied history at the universities in Geneva and Zurich. In 1947 he received his doctorate in Zurich with a thesis on church history, the subsequent habilitation took place on a topic of agricultural history. Kaminski gave up his position as a private lecturer at the University of Geneva in 1950 and went to Poland as a staunch socialist.

In Poland Kaminski worked primarily as a producer and dramaturge; he also wrote numerous plays and screenplays in Polish. At times he lived as a foreign correspondent in Morocco and Algeria.

In 1968 he was expatriated from Poland; he went to Israel, but returned to Switzerland in 1969. There he lived in Zurich and worked for Swiss television. His strongly autobiographical narrative works in German, which have been published since 1983, were a great public success and enabled him to live independently from 1986. In 1989 he married Doris Morf , a Swiss politician and writer.

André Kaminski received the Mara Cassens Prize “The First Novel” in 1987 and the honorary gift of the City of Zurich in 1990.

He found his final resting place in the Nordheim cemetery .
