Weranika Tscharkassava (born January 12, 1959 in Minsk , today Belarus; † October 20, 2004 there ) was an opposition Belarusian journalist.

Weranika Tscharkassawa worked for various opposition newspapers, in the 1980s for the BDG , 1995–2003 for the Belorusskaya Gazeta and most recently 2003–2004 for Salidarnaść ('Solidarity').

She was specifically engaged in research in journalism and wrote on social affairs, including topics on religious sects and Roma communities in Belarus. But she also published several articles on the illegal arms trade between Aljaksandr Lukashenkas Belarus and Saddam Hussein's Iraq .

Charkassava was murdered on October 20, 2004 with about twenty knife wounds. A perpetrator was not discovered. The official investigation was stopped in December 2005, resumed in February 2006 and ended again on March 14, 2006, as suspects were allegedly not to be identified urgently.
