Carl August Ulrich Adelbert von Bornstedt (born January 12, 1807 in Stendal , † September 21, 1851 in the Illenau sanatorium near Achern ) was a publicist and revolutionary.

His father was the Prussian major Eugen von Bornstedt and died in the battle of Lützen ( Großgörschen ) on May 2, 1813. The mother, Annette b. von Düring , had Adelbert von Bornstedt educated in the cadet institution. He was promoted to lieutenant on April 8, 1824. After six years he resigned and after a short stay in Brazil went to Paris in 1830 . In 1831 he volunteered for the Foreign Legion , which had just been founded. Bornstedt took part in the fighting in Algeria and was seriously wounded. In Paris Bornstedt worked as a journalist and editor for various exile newspapers ( Gazette Allemande de Paris , Vorwärts! ) And was a correspondent for the “ Allgemeine Zeitung ” in Augsburg. On January 25, 1845, he was expelled from France and went to Brussels. There he founded the Deutsche Brusseler Zeitung for German emigrants in 1846 , which campaigned for freedom of the press in Germany, the separation of church and state and for the republic and which, despite its small circulation and the prohibition in Germany, became one of the most important press organs of the opposition. Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx were part of the editorial team. Immediately after the February Revolution of 1848 the newspaper ceased to appear and von Bornstedt, Engels and Marx went to Paris. Here von Bornstedt founded the German Democratic Society on March 1, 1848 . The German Legion emerged from it under the leadership of Georg Herwegh , whose Vice President Bornstedt became. When the Legion tried to come to the aid of the revolutionaries in Baden under the leadership of Friedrich Hecker and Gustav Struve , it was wiped out in the battle near Dossenbach , Bornstedt was captured and sentenced to one year solitary confinement in the Bruchsal prison. Although he was liberated on May 13, 1849 by the Baden Revolution , he was soon taken to the Illenau sanatorium near Achern, where he died on September 21, 1851.
