Karl Johann von Schmidt (born January 12, 1817 in Schwedt ; † August 25, 1875 in Danzig ) was a Prussian major general .

Karl was a son of the heir to Krackow and a lieutenant colonel a. D. , who was last with the 2nd Artillery Brigade, Wilhelm Heinrich Karl Ferdinand von Schmidt (1776–1839) and Charlotte Friederike Tugendreich, nee. von Zychlinski (1795-1821).

Career

After attending grammar school in Stralsund and the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin , Schmidt was transferred to the 4th Uhlan Regiment of the Prussian Army in 1834 as a surplus second lieutenant . From 1838 to 1840 he was commanded to the teaching squadron and in 1842 became regimental adjutant. He was employed as adjutant of the 3rd division in 1846 and advanced to prime lieutenant in 1848 . From 1849 to 1850 he was a teacher at the division school of the 3rd Division, was promoted to Rittmeister in 1852 and in 1853 was squadron chief in the 4th Uhlan Regiment. Schmidt received in 1859 initially the character as a Major , in the same year as well as the patent for rank and was-budgetary staff officer . From 1860 to 1863 he was the leader of the 4th Landwehr-Uhlan Regiment, with which he was transferred to the Polish border in 1863 . Also in 1863 he was entrusted with the command of the Cuirassier Regiment No. 4 , under position à la suite of the same. When he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in September 1863, he also became commander of the cuirassier regiment No. 4. After participating in the German-Danish War , he was awarded the fourth class of the Red Eagle in 1865 and was promoted to colonel in June 1866 . With the Main Army he took part in the German War in 1866 , in particular the battles in Dermbach , Aschaffenburg , Tauberbischofsheim and Gerchsheim . Schmidt received the Order of the Crown III. 1st class with swords and became the commander of Hussar Regiment No. 16 . The award of the Honorary Commander's Cross of the Oldenburg House Order took place in 1867.

In the war against France in 1870/71 he headed his regiment. After the previous commander was wounded in the Battle of Mars-la-Tour , he was given command of the 14th Cavalry Brigade on August 16, 1870 and was subsequently repeatedly leader of the 6th Cavalry Division , including in the battle of Le Mans . He was seriously wounded himself in the Battle of Vionville . In this war he received both classes of the Iron Cross and the order Pour le Mérite . His achievements include the foray into the Sologne after the second Battle of Orléans and the pursuit after the Battle of Le Mans, which he undertook from January 13th to 17th, 1871 up to Laval .

After the peace he worked on the training of the cavalry and pioneered the leadership of cavalry division exercises. In 1873 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves. Karl von Schmidt last took over the 7th Division . He died in the middle of his work on August 25, 1875 in Danzig.

Schmidt married Helene Pauline von Göhren (1816–1906) in Berlin in 1841. The marriage produced four sons and one daughter.

Honors

In 1902 a monument was erected in his honor in Schleswig in front of Gottorf Castle , created by the sculptor Conrad Freyberg . From his estate be was adjutant of Vollard-Bockelsberg at the request of the inspector of the cavalry of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia an instruction concerning education, training and leadership using the cavalry out.

Also in his honor the 1st Pomeranian Uhlan Regiment No. 4 was named Uhlan Regiment “von Schmidt” .
