Conrad Freyberg (born March 14, 1842 in Stettin , † October 16, 1915 in Berlin ) was a German painter and sculptor.

Life

Conrad Freyberg trained at the Berlin Art Academy and then entered the studio of Carl Steffeck , based on whose example he devoted himself to painting soldiers and horses. He soon found a specialty in the individual rider portraits as well as in whole groups of riders on a smaller scale, which he developed with great luck by combining portrait resemblance with elegant representation.

From there he went on to depictions of calm moments from the Franco-German War , which were even more figurative , of which Prince Hohenlohe at Clamart before Paris, the arrival of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia on the battlefield of Vionville , the surrender of Metz (1877), the flag parade Prince Friedrich Karl (1883) and the parade on Longchamp in front of Paris should be highlighted.

He is less happy in full-size equestrian portraits . Among the smaller groups of riders and portraits, the most important are: Prince Karl of Prussia with his retinue in front of Paris (1872), Prince Karl's ride to the par force hunt (1876), group of Garde du Corps officers (1875) and court hunt in Letzlingen (1881) . Together with Eugen Boermel , he created the Prince Albrecht Monument in Berlin-Charlottenburg in 1901 .

Conrad Freyberg died in Berlin in 1915 at the age of 73. He was buried in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.
