Pedro Benito Antonio Quevedo y Quintano (born January 12, 1736 in Villanueva del Fresno near Badajoz in Spain , † March 27, 1818 in Ourense ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He studied at the Jesuit College of Granada , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1753 , as well as at the seminary of Salamanca and the University of Santo Tomás in Ávila , where he received a degree in theology in 1755 . The ordination of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salamanca he received on 22 March 1760. After further studies at the University of Salamanca , he was 1766 there to the doctor of theology doctorate and was from 1770 until his appointment as bishop professor at this university.

He was called to the Bishop of Orense on April 15, 1776. The episcopal ordination donated him on July 14, 1776 Felipe Beltrán Serrano , the Bishop of Salamanca; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishops in Toledo Felipe Pérez Santa María and Francisco Mateo Aguiriano Gómez .

Twice, in 1776 (or 1778) and in 1814, he turned down an offer to become Archbishop of Seville . During the French Revolution he accepted French priests into his diocese who thus escaped persecution. In 1812 he refused to adopt the new Spanish constitution and went into exile in Portugal , where he lived in Torey , which was part of his diocese. He was able to return in 1814 when King Ferdinand VII returned to Spain.

Pope Pius VII appointed him cardinal in pectore in March 1816 , which was published in September 1816. However, he never traveled to Rome to receive the cardinal's hat and a title.

Pedro Benito Antonio Quevedo y Quintano died in Ourense in March 1818 and was buried in the local cathedral .
