Ernst Bier (* 12. January 1951 in Barntrup , North Rhine-Westphalia) is a German jazz - drummer .

Live and act

Bier studied with Billy Brooks at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern from 1976 to 1978 , which he supplemented in the early 1980s with private studies with Vernel Fournier , Charlie Persip and Elvin Jones in New York City . Bier was previously a member of the Just Friends group between 1977 and 1981 (record 1979), then played with Paolo Radoni, in Attila Zoller's trio (1980 to 1984) and under Ted Curson in the Blue Note House Band . Since 1984 he has been a member of Perry Robinson's band (5 albums).

In 1987 he moved to Cologne, 1992 to Berlin. There he was co-leader of a quartet with Mack Goldsbury and Ed Schuller , which was partly expanded to include Herb Robertson (CD 2001). From this formation came the albums At Night When You Go To Sleep (1996) and Next Move (2001). He also played with Herb Geller , Günter Heinz , Allan Praskin , John Schröder , Matthias Schubert , Dave Pike , Gary Valente , Bill Bickford , Reggie Moore, Perry Robinson , Felix Wahnschaffe and Nesin Howhannesijan . In his current projects he works with Sonny Fortune , Karl Schloz and Joe Sachse . In 1996, beer was the focus of a television portrait on WDR / 3Sat by documentary filmmaker Werner Kubny.
