Gert Adriani

Gert Adriani (born January 12, 1908 in Vlotho ; † March 2, 1989 in Göttingen ) was a German art historian . From 1958 to 1970 he was director of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig .

Life

Adriani studied art history in Göttingen , Berlin , Vienna , Graz and Jena , where he received his doctorate in 1933 with a thesis on monastery libraries in Austria and southern Germany. Adriani worked as a research assistant at the University of Graz until 1936, then switched to the Dresden art collections as a volunteer and in 1938 became a research assistant at the Albertina in Vienna.

Activity under National Socialism

After the “ Anschluss ” he worked for the National Socialist State Secretary for Art, Kajetan Mühlmann . In 1942, on the recommendation of Hans Posse, he became curator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna , where he was head of the picture gallery from 1943 to 1945 and was also involved in acquisitions from the art theft by the Mühlmann office in the Netherlands and France, so he made purchases for Vienna Image by Jan Weenix . He was released in 1945.

In the period between 1942 and 1944 Adriani wrote eleven articles, six of them essays, for the monthly Kunst dem Volk published by Heinrich Hoffmann .

Post-war activity

Adriani moved to Detmold in 1947 and to Düsseldorf the following year , where he was curator in 1948 and director of the art museum between 1954 and 1958 .

Adriani was appointed director of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig on July 14, 1958, which he headed until April 30, 1970. In 1969 he published the first catalog of paintings after 1945. Several paintings and modern graphics were acquired during his directorate. Adriani's successor was Rüdiger Klessmann .
