Ambrose II of Viermund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ambrosius II von Viermund zu Neersen (* around 1550; † 28 July 1588 ) was hereditary bailiff to Neersen from 1572 and a member of the Lower Rhine noble family Virmond-Neersen (1502–1744). In 1580 he obtained the high jurisdiction in Anrath and thus de facto sovereign rights.

He was the son of Johann I von Viermund and his first wife Katharina Scheiffart von Merode.

Term of office

Ambrosius was enfeoffed in 1572 with the hereditary bailiwick of Neersen including Anrath. The paternal bailiwick of Uerdingen went to his brother Johann von Viermund .

In 1579 he had a gallows built "at the Black Lake" near Neersen. He established its own high court and thus entered into sharp competition with the Liedberger bailiff regarding the jurisdiction in Anrath. In 1580 the Archbishop of Cologne finally confirmed Ambrose's right to the high jurisdiction in Anrath and thus ultimately to sovereign rights.

During the Truchsess turmoil , Ambrosius stood on the side of the deposed Archbishop of Cologne, Gebhard Truchsess von Waldburg . He joined the Reformed Church and openly committed to the Protestant cause. Anrath and Neersen were then plundered by Catholic troops in 1585/86. The Truchsessian War claimed more victims on the Lower Rhine than the Thirty Years War .

Marriage and offspring

Ambrosius was married twice, his first marriage to Barbara von Bernsau († after 1571), widow of Gottfried von Wylich, bailiff of Porz . From his first marriage he had four sons, all of whom died in childhood, of whom Hans Adolf is known by name.

In his second marriage in 1584 he married Alvara von Quadt zu Wickrath († 1609), daughter of Johann von Quadt (around 1519–1570), Lord of Wickrath and Kreuzberg, and Anna Barbara von Vlodrop (around 1510–1579), mistress of Reckheim . From this marriage he had four sons, Ambrosius , Friedrich Arnold , Johann Adrian and Johann and a daughter Odilia .

Most of his children died young, only the youngest, Johann, who was just two weeks old when Ambrosius II died in 1588, reached the age of majority, inherited his father and continued his tribe.

He was buried in the parish church in Anrath.
