Johann I. von Viermund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I von Viermund zu Neersen (* 1516 ; † 1572 ) was hereditary bailiff to Neersen and a member of the Lower Rhine noble family Virmond-Neersen (1502–1744) from 1540 .

Life

From 1538 to 1543 he was electoral Cologne bailiff of Linn .

Johann was enfeoffed in 1540 by the Archbishop of Cologne and Elector Hermann V von Wied with the bailiwicks of Neersen , Anrath and Uerdingen . He succeeded his father Ambrosius, who had died the year before .

Johann, who tended towards Protestantism , tried again and again to separate his bailiwick from the Electoral Cologne sphere of influence, but encountered resistance from the archbishop. For example, an incident from 1554, the so-called "Poppelsdorf homage", has been handed down. At that time the Anrather missed aldermen mandatory tribute of kurkölner Archbishop Adolf III. from Schaumburg in Liedberg . He then cited the Anrathers and their Vogt Johann to his residence in Poppelsdorf to make up for the homage there. The behavior of Johann von Viermund is seen as a sign of his family's striving for independence.

Johann died in 1572. His successor in Neersen and Anrath was his son Ambrosius II von Viermund , while his son Johann von Viermund followed him in Uerdingen.
