Herman latch
Herman Riegel (born February 27, 1834 in Potsdam , † August 12, 1900 in Braunschweig ) was a German art historian , museum director who called for the establishment of the General German Language Association (ADSV).
Life
Herman Riegel first worked in the bookstore of his father Friedrich Riegel , who was a well-known publisher and in whose publishing house between 1840 and 1850, for example, around 20 titles by Karl Friedrich Schinkel were published.
From Easter 1854, Herman Riegel studied history, geography, literary studies, art history and philosophy in Berlin. He wrote both fiction and art history articles for various newspapers as well as some works on art and various artists, such as Peter von Cornelius .
Director of the Ducal Museum in Braunschweig
After he received his doctorate in Rostock in 1862 , he headed the City Museum in Leipzig from 1868 and completed his habilitation there in 1869. He then taught from 1869 to 1870 as a private lecturer at the University of Leipzig . In March 1871 Riegel became director of the Ducal Museum in Braunschweig and professor of the history of architecture at the Polytechnic there . Since the museum's collections were housed very cramped in the Pauline monastery , a new building was needed, the implementation and implementation of which is largely due to Riegel's commitment. The new building of today's Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum was opened in 1887. In addition, in 1897 he initiated the preservation of Dankwarderode Castle . Riegel remained a lecturer at the Polytechnic and director of the museum until his death in 1900. He was succeeded as museum director by Paul Jonas Meier .
General German language association
In his works of fiction he reveals himself to be decidedly anti-French, which led to his calling in August 1885 for the General German Language Association (ADSV) to be established. From September 1885 he was instrumental in founding the ADSV. One of the goals of the association was to remove all foreign words from the German vocabulary. Riegel was the first chairman of the language association until 1893.
