Johann Christoph Schwedler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Christoph Schwedler (born December 21, 1672 in Krobsdorf ; † January 12, 1730 in Niederwiese ) was a German Lutheran theologian, pastor and hymn poet.

Life

The son of the Erbgerichtscholtzen and farmer Anton Schwedler worked on his parents' estate until he was thirteen. In 1689 he attended the grammar school in Zittau , moved to the University of Leipzig in 1695 to study theology and in 1697 acquired the academic degree of master's degree in philosophy.

In 1698 he became a substitute for the deacon Christoph Adolf in Niederwiese near Greiffenberg in Silesia, in the same year his successor and 1701 pastor there at the so-called border or refuge church at Niederwiesa (in Upper Lusatia near the Silesian-Saxon border). Schwedler has distinguished himself as a poet of sacred songs and a prolific writer. In addition, he has been handed down as a penetrating pulpit speaker who was open to pietism .
