Arnold Mengering (born September 1, 1596 in Halle ; † January 12, 1647 ibid) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Live and act

Mengering was born as the youngest son of five children of the Dutch merchant Heinrich Mengering (* Deventer; † May 13, 1608 in Halle) and his wife Anna († 1598 in Halle), daughter of the Leipzig blacksmith Lucas Krause. Since he had lost his parents early, the penniless orphan was able to complete school and high school in Halle with the financial support of influential friends.

They also supported him financially when he began studying at the University of Wittenberg on May 2, 1615 . Soon, however, he was able to acquire an electoral Saxon scholarship through excellent achievements. After initial philosophical studies, which he completed on September 27, 1618 with the academic degree of a master's degree, Mengering had turned to theological studies. He attended lectures by Friedrich Balduin , Leonhard Hutter , and Balthasar Meisner, and was particularly encouraged by Wolfgang Franz .

In 1619 he moved to the University of Jena to continue his theology studies with Johannes Major and Johann Gerhard . After he was accepted as an adjunct in the philosophical faculty in Jena in 1621 , he went to Colbitz as pastor in 1622 , was pastor in the Magdeburg suburb of Sudenburg in 1624 , moved to Löbejün as senior pastor in 1627 and was in his hometown as pastor on December 3rd Hallesches Dom has been employed. During the occupation of the city of Halle during the Thirty Years' War , he was deposed and expelled by the Roman Catholic clergy in 1630.

He found asylum in Bitterfeld , went to the Saxon court in Dresden as second court preacher in 1631 and worked as court preacher and assessor at the consistory for Duke Johann Philipp in Altenburg from May 1635 . After he received his doctorate in theology at the Jena Academy on April 20, 1638 , after the death of his employer in 1640 he moved to Halle as superintendent and high school professor , where he worked until the end of his life.

Most of his writings were created in the context of his professional activity. As a representative of Lutheran orthodoxy , he was a widely respected theologian and also left its mark on the history of the hymn.
