Andreas Merck
Andreas Merck (born November 28, 1595 in Querfurt ; † January 7, 1640 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian . Merck was senior pastor at the market church of Our Dear Women in Halle and general superintendent of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg .
Life
Andreas Merck was born as the son of the Querfurt lawyer Christoph Merck († 1598). His mother Catharina († 1636) was born Reinbottin. Merck studied theology at the universities in Helmstedt , Wittenberg and Jena . After a disputation in 1614, he passed the master’s examination at the Wittenberg University . On the way to Gießen to the university there , in 1617 he received a vocation as archdeacon at the Marktkirche Our Dear Women in Halle, an office he held until 1623.
After the death of Johannes Olearius in 1623 Merck took over his office as pastor at the Marktkirche Our Dear Women. In order to do justice to the dignity of the office, he received his doctorate on December 14, 1624 at the Theological Faculty of the University of Jena under Johann Himmel with the dissertation Via Salutis Nov-Antiqua, Seu De Modo Iustificandi Et Salvandi Sub Veteri Testamento Aeque Ac Novo, Per Fidem nimirum in Christum, Exetasis as Doctor of Theology . In 1632 he was appointed superintendent in Halle and in 1634 by the Swedish chancellor Axel Oxenstierna , who at that time administered the ore monastery of Magdeburg during the Thirty Years' War , as general superintendent. Oxenstierna sets up its own consistory and appointed Merck as its assessor .
In 1635 he was offered a position as superintendent in Braunschweig, which he refused. Due to the confusion of the Thirty Year Old Warrior, his work in Halle turned out to be difficult. Theologically he deals with religious enthusiasts , including Valentin Weigel and Ezekiel Meths, whom he also criticized in several writings. A few days after the New Year's sermon he gave in his congregation, Andreas Merck fell seriously ill and died on January 7, 1640 at the age of 44 in Halle. He was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker , his grave is in crypt arch 65.
Merck left numerous writings. In addition to his disputations and dissertation, above all sermons and pamphlets against religious enthusiasts.
