Jutta Pallos-Schönauer (born January 12, 1925 in Reghin , German: Saxon-Regen ) is a German-Romanian painter and graphic artist .

life and work

Pallos-Schönauer studied from 1948 to 1954 at the State Art Academy "Ion Andreescu" in Cluj at Gabor Miklossy and Imre Nagy . After graduating with distinction, she worked as a lecturer at the folk art college in Cluj from 1954 to 1956. Since then she has been working as a freelance painter and graphic artist. Jutta Pallos-Schönauer also worked as a book illustrator in Romania. In 1986 she moved to the Federal Republic of Germany and initially lived in Karlsruhe. After the death of her husband, she moved to Stuttgart, where her daughter lives.

Jutta Pallos-Schönauer uses a variety of painting techniques in her painterly work, including watercolors , graphic black and white techniques, colored pastel works and oil painting on canvas.

In her work she reflects on people, landscapes, the architecture and culture of her Transylvanian homeland, the legacy of a lost cultural landscape. The motifs that appear in her work include an artistic examination of almost all important events in Romanian history and their effects on the culture of the German minority in Romania . From these historical experiences a deep connection to the homeland grows, to customs and traditions, the influences of which are reflected in the work of Jutta Pallos-Schönauer in expression, color and rhythm. Her work focuses on the surrender of those who remained in Romania and the loss of home and identity, for which there is no consolation or hope in her works. Her works range from figural compositions to architectural images. Of particular importance for her artistic work are her drawings and pictures of the cityscapes of Cluj-Napoca, Schäßburg and Sibiu , in which she embarks on a nostalgic search for her homeland in the representation of old buildings, churches , fortified churches and idyllic alleys. Her pictures, however, are not an uncritical reflection, but always pose the "quiet and probing" question of identity and origin. The pictures by Jutta Pallos-Schönauer, viewed in their entirety, remain in the traditional, realistic style. In them, however, Jutta Pallos-Schönauer creates a sustainable synthesis of the subject matter and the technical realization of the object without resorting to elements of Cubism or Expressionism that are possible in terms of composition .

Jutta Pallos-Schönauer's work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Romania, Austria , Hungary , Sweden , Italy , Canada and the USA , among others .

In Germany there were regional and national retrospective exhibitions with her works a. a. 1990 in Karlsruhe , 2005 in Düsseldorf and Esslingen am Neckar and 2008 in Stuttgart .
