André Morellet
André Morellet (born March 7, 1727 in Lyon , † January 12, 1819 in Paris ) was a French economist , encyclopedist and writer, one of the last of the philosophes of the Enlightenment .
Morellet was first trained by the Jesuits in Lyon and later at the Sorbonne . Voltaire called him L'Abbé Mords-les for his quick-witted and biting joke . His most important works are a short pamphlet in response to Palissot's bizarre piece Les Philosophes (which earned him a short stay in the Bastille for allegedly defamation of Palissot's patroness, Princess Robeck), and a response to Ferdinando Galiani's Commerce des blês (1770) . The Enlightenment was a member of Madame Geoffrin's salon , participated in an eulogy for her and published her works. He was also a frequent guest of Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach and his circle, the Coterie holbachique .
Later he worked in quasi-diplomatic relations with English statesmen. In 1785 he was retired and accepted into the Académie Française . A year before his death, he published four volumes of Mélanges de littérature et de philosophie du XVIII siècle , essentially compiled from his earlier publications. After his death, his valuable Mémoires sur le XVIIIe siècle et la Révolution (1821) appeared.
