Streaming codec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A streaming codec is a highly compressive audio or video codec optimized for streaming media .

The conversion into special streaming - file formats is required primarily to the data rate to reduce massive, so the typical narrowband Internet connectivity of the home user to transmit a continuous stream of data is sufficient: The digital audio stream of audio CD ( CD DA ) has a data rate of 176 kByte / s (= 1,408 kbit / s); Modem users, on the other hand, are often still connected to the Internet at around 14.4 or 28.8 kbit / s; even a single ISDN channel only offers 64 kbit / s, and even a normal broadband T-DSL connection with its 1024 kbit / s is not enough to receive a sound signal in full CD quality. The transmission of video data requires significantly higher data transmission rates .
