Heinrich Friedrich Siedentopf (born January 12, 1906 in Hanover , † November 28, 1963 in Tübingen ) was a German astronomer .

Life

Siedentopf was associate professor for astronomy in 1933 and full professor for astronomy at the University of Jena between 1940 and 1946 . He worked at the University Observatory and the Astrophysical Institute . The focus of his work was astrophysics and the theory of periodically changing stars. In 1949 Siedentopf was appointed professor for astronomy at the University of Tübingen, at the same time he became deputy director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Research in Freiburg im Breisgau. In Tübingen, he rebuilt the chair for astronomy in the post-war years. In 1960 he arranged for the new astronomical institute to be built on Waldhäuser Höhe. Until his untimely death in 1963, Siedentopf played a key role in setting up the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

Since 1955 he was a corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

The crater 'Siedentopf' (♁22 ° 0 ′ 0 ″ N, 135 ° 30 ′ 0 ″ E) on the Earth's moon was named after him and in 1993 the small planet (5375) Siedentopf, discovered in 1989 .
