Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II
The Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II ( Victor Emanuel II Theater ) is a municipal theater with around 1,000 seats in the Sicilian city of Messina .
history
The theater was opened on January 12, 1852 as "Teatro Santa Elisabetta" (in homage to Maria Isabel of Spain , mother of the Sicilian King Ferdinand II ). In 1860 it was renamed in honor of the Italian King Victor Emmanuel II .
The theater was one of the few buildings in Messina to survive the great earthquake on December 28, 1908.
Today it is the main venue of the "Teatro di Messina".

The theater was designed in the classical style by the architects Pietro Valente from Naples and C. Falconieri from Messina and built from April 23, 1842 to 1852.
The allegorical group of figures "Time discovers truth" by Saro Zagari (Messina) crowns the building.
In 1985 Renato Guttuso created the fresco Mito di Colapesce for the interior of the theater.
