Saro Zagari

Saro Zagari (* 1821 in Messina ; † February 2, 1897 ibid) was an Italian architect and sculptor of neoclassicism in Sicily .

Life

Zagari studied drawing and architecture with Letterio Subba . In 1842 he finished his studies. With a scholarship from Messina he went to Rome , where he resumed his studies with the neoclassical sculptor Pietro Tenerani . As a sculptor he soon gained a good reputation so that he was accepted into the Accademia di San Luca .

Works

In 1847 he created the allegorical marble group “Time discovers truth” (Il Tempo che scopre la Verità e Messina) for the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II in Messina . In 1853 he began with the marble sculpture “ Karl III. “, Which was erected in Messina in 1859. The grave sculpture for Silvestro La Farina was preserved on the Gran Camposanto of Messina.

Most of his work was destroyed by the great Messina earthquake in 1908 .
